The Focus

My word for the line was stretch. Originally i was going to do a physical a study of the stretches of land on the line between obstacles. But then i started thinking why do the normal physical boring form of stretch when i can really challenge people to think using what i like to call they hypothetical stretch. The Hypothetical type of stretching is when someone must extend their imagination or the way they think in order to understand, comprehend, or grasp a new idea or thing that as never been presented r that they are not used to. So my project comes from both the physical and hypothetical forms. I made two videos, well one video, with two completely different forms. in one video you see me walking the eight physical Stretches of the line each a little bit different based on its terrain. In the second video you see the same footage but each stretch of land is different colored and has a different effect with a different soundtrack to each. Now the point is to watch both at the same time side by side sand it forces you to stretch your mind to understand that both videos are the line and it shows you that even when changed up the line is still there and still exists because the lie is really nothing but a stretch of our imagination seeing as how it doesn’t fully exist physically other than in the physical land stretches.

The Line: The Stretch

Posted: September 29, 2011 in Uncategorized

My word is stretch. They way i’ve decided to compare the line and my word is through an unconventional way of using the word stretch. When thinking about the line and the word stretch yo may thing it’s a stretch of land or it stretches really far but when i look at the stretch of the line i see it in a hypothetical way as the line is a stretch of our imagination.

Stretch:

The extent or scope to which something can be stretched

(tr) Informal to expand or elaborate (a story, etc.) beyond what is credible or acceptable

The line yes is a “physical” thing it does exist but the way it exists is through a stretch of the belief that the line is there when it physically isn’t. There is no line on the ground, or on any real maps , nor does anyone know about it outside of the foundations class.  We must cause ourselves to stretch outside of what we know and what we think we know and make the line real to ourselves and to our class mates and we much create it with our imagination.

Stretch is a versatile word. It can be used in many different ways either very simply as a noun such as doing a stretch to loosen ones body or as deep as making a stretch between two words or the stretch between two theories.

PHYSICAL STRETCHING

Studies about the benefits of stretching have had mixed results. Some show that stretching helps, while others show that stretching has little if any benefit. The main benefits of stretching are thought to be:

  • Improving athletic performance
  • Decreasing the risk of activity-based injuries

Stretching can help improve flexibility. And better flexibility may improve your performance in physical activities or decrease your risk of injuries by helping your joints move through their full range of motion. For instance, say your Achilles tendon is tight and lacks flexibility. If you do a lot of hill walking, your foot may not move through its full range of motion. Over time, this can increase your risk of tendinitis or tendinopathy in your Achilles tendon. Stretching your Achilles tendon, though, may improve the range of motion in your ankle. This, in turn, can decrease the risk of microtrauma to your tendon that can lead to overload and injury.

Stretching also increases blood flow to the muscle. And you may come to enjoy the ritual of stretching before — or better yet, after — hitting the trail, ballet floor or soccer field. (Mayo clinic.com).

The amazing thing about the word stretch is that most of the time throughout the day we are doing some sort of stretching that we don’t even realize wether its lying to someone(stretching the truth) or its telling a story a little different, maybe stretching in class to stay awake or to become less stiff,or how about when your in an argument and you make a wide point to try to prove your own point. As much as it doesn’t seem likely stretching is apart of our daily lives in hundreds of different ways we just usually don’t step back long enough to see it. The question is are we using it in the right way? Maybe more people should stretch to feel better both physically and mentally while maybe if others stopped stretching things so much they might become less stressed or be more mentally settled with them selves. So the question i pose is how do you stretch everyday and how do you feel about that type of stretching and if you changed it would you maybe feel better in some way?

Possible outcomes of not stretching:

  1. Hurt muscles
  2. Hurt feeling
  3. The truth
  4. Complete world honesty

STRETCHING IS EVERYWHERE!! When you wake up, when you talk, before sports, when you lie, when you tell a story the list goes on and on so i say it one final time  the word stretch is everywhere in everyday life no matter where you go you can’t avoid it and that is the true depth of the word stretch.

CAUTION! The Line

Posted: September 22, 2011 in Uncategorized

The idea for my exploration of the line came when i found a piece of caution tape on the path of the line. My original concept was to use the caution tape as a representation of the line making it a physical thing but as i walked the line i found a more useful way i guess you could say to use it. While i explored the line i came to realize that there were many obstacles in the way of walking so with my original concept in mind i used the caution tape to document different objects that would get in the way while showing you the line physically with said obstacle. I documented each with a picture. Now in some cases there wasn’t something blocking the path but a unique object/objects in the path that you would have to duck or turn or were just very unique to be in the line. Also along the path i encountered a girl who gave me an odd water bottle out of her bag which is featured in some of the photos.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Some of the objects i found include:

  • Buildings such as Cohen, Seidman, Openhyme, Junior Apartments, Powell, and several apartments on the state side of the line.
  • A bag of Beer cans.
  • A pot hanging from a tree.
  • Several Trees.
  • A bottle i was given by a girl walking along the line.
  • Many bushes. A creek.
  • A fallen tree.

There are many more obstacles on the university side of the line but i hope with this information and the pictures i can give people a physical look at the line both when the obstacles present themselves and when walking in general.

As my physical project i took the caution tape in the pictures and took all the pictures and taped them to the back in the order of the actual line so i have a physical look at the line while knowing the path and the obstacles in order.

Directions to my spot.
Come out of cohen studios and turn right. Follow the creek until you hit the green bridge. Cross over the green bridge and go right and follow the line of stones until you see the hill of stones. My spot is on the side facing the creek.
Exploration #15 Sound map Listen in a place for an hour and create a sound map based on where the sounds are in location to you. The blog wouldn’t let me add one or create one so will have copy in class tomorrow.
Exploration #57 Thought experiments create questions that have to be answered with the imagination.
What if the wall was a snake? or a gate to another world? what if it was paint proof?
What if the creek was filled with chocolate milk? would it be safe? or what if water was bad for us? would the creek be a dangerous place?
What if rocks broke like glass? what if everything was as facile as glass? would we have to be smaller or lighter? would we be more careful as a species?
And what if trees were made of candy would they disappear faster? or would they be more valuable? What if they were just edible the way they are? would they be more or less protected and what would we use as or source of building this? would it cause us to look into new sources and materials?

Homework Three Explorations.

Doing this i realized that water has no ‘Shapes’ it cash become and shape it wants and needs to be.

Exploration #37: Come up with several ways of documenting time going by.

My computer died, my playlist is over, my roommate came back, my roommate left, me and my friend have switched topics in conversation, my friend came back from classes, I’m in a different room, its getting dark out, the time is changing, the clocks are moving, a miss set alarm on my phone went off, I’m getting tired, i put a diode at the top of my page, my phone died, the songs over, the advil i took wore off, and i just drew i giant arrow to the top of my page.
